Making Schools LGBTQ SAFE

The LGBTQ+ Safe Zone Program is a program that aims to provide LGBTQ+ community members with the skills and resources they need to achieve social and academic advancement. This program consists of multiple modules, which increase in complexity. It covers practical skills and concepts for developing relationships and for making connections with others.

The Safe Space Alliance was founded in 2006 to assist the LGBTQ+ community in finding safe spaces. The network includes bars, restaurants, and housing accommodations, and aims to provide support to individuals and families seeking a safe place to live and work. In addition to providing safe places, the Alliance also works to raise awareness and protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.

The Safe Zone team provides safe zone training to teachers, administrators, and other school staff. The team helps schools and other organizations understand their assumptions about the LGBTQ+ population. They also distribute materials and promote the Safe Zone Program to the local community. As an additional resource, the Safe Zone Volunteers attend district meetings to network, provide professional development, and share resources with other educators.

Many educators are working on a variety of projects to make their schools safer for the LGBTQ+ community. Some of these projects include a school-wide Safe Zone Allyship Program and Gay-Straight Alliance clubs. Others are working on one or two components, such as a School-Based Behavioral Health Program.

One of the GLSEN biennial LGBTQ SAFE National School Climate Surveys has found that nearly half of LGBTQ+ students reported having an adult at their school with whom they could discuss LGBTQ issues. Additionally, these students reported that their schools were safer for LGBTQ+ students.

While the language of safety has been a central component of LGBTQ programming, the need for more realistic expectations has also been highlighted. For example, in many countries, public displays of affection from couples are considered illegal. These laws can result in a fine or imprisonment. Other nations, such as Russia, have gained international infamy for the treatment of their LGBTQ+ citizens.

Another reason for the need for a Safe Space is the high rate of suicide among adolescents. Studies have found that, in the United States, suicide rates for LGBTQ+ teens are more than four times higher than those of non-LGBTQ+ teens. Furthermore, many of the at-risk youth for drug abuse are also LGBTQ+.

Although there are many ways to implement a Safe Zone, the key is making sure that all parties involved are well-informed and can participate. Educators can become Safe Zone allies by participating in introductory training. Students and other community members can become Safe Zone volunteers by attending district meetings to network, share resources, and learn about the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

An important aspect of the Safe Space program is that it certifies community organizations and healthcare providers that offer inclusive services. Whether the organization is a bar, restaurant, or an entire community center, the Safe Space team will make sure the organization meets the requirements of the program. Oftentimes, these organizations will receive a decal, a symbol of safety for victims of crimes involving the LGBTQ+ community.
